Travel light...Let Go of Old Baggage

Jan 23, 2026

Have you ever tried to start something new while still holding on to something old? It’s like trying to run a race while dragging a suitcase full of bricks. You might move forward, but every step feels heavier than it should. That’s what it’s like when we drag old baggage into a new season.

I’ve learned — sometimes the hard way — that you can’t enter a new chapter if your heart is still stuck in the old one. Maybe it’s a hurt that never healed, a betrayal that still stings, a disappointment that keeps replaying in your mind, or even guilt from a decision you wish you could redo. Whatever it is, carrying it around doesn’t make you stronger — it makes you weary.

But here’s the beautiful truth: God never intended for you to travel heavy.

“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” — Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

Your next season requires lighter luggage — not more strength to carry what’s unnecessary. Let me give you a few pointers on how to do this:

Step 1: Acknowledge What You’re Carrying

You can’t drop what you won’t admit you’re still holding. I remember a time when I kept saying, “I’m fine,” when in reality, I was just functioning. It wasn’t until I got honest with God and said, “Lord, this still hurts,” that healing began.

“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.” — Lamentations 3:40 (NIV)

Sometimes freedom starts with a simple confession: “I’m tired of carrying this.”

Step 2: Forgive — Even When It Still Hurts

Forgiveness isn’t about saying what happened was okay; it’s about saying, I choose peace over pain. The moment you forgive, you lighten your load.

“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” — Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

Unforgiveness keeps you tied to moments God has already moved past. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; it means freeing your heart to heal.

Step 3: Release the Past — Don’t Rehearse It

If you keep rehearsing the old season, you’ll keep reliving it.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” — Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)

Every time you replay the old story, you delay the new one God is writing. Let Him edit your timeline — He’s a far better Author.

Every new season is a divine invitation to start fresh. God doesn’t just change your situation — He transforms you. But He can’t fill hands that are still full of old baggage.

So today, I challenge you: Let it go.
Forgive what hurt you. Release what drained you. Walk away from what no longer serves your growth.
And as you do, remember this: Grace travels light — and so should you.

“Don’t drag old baggage into a new season. Travel light with grace. #LetItGo.” - Trish M Quote
